It started out when I was about 9 years old.

“Girl, you and your brothers will go snorkeling after this. Ayah have paid for everything,” my father said during our family holiday in Tioman Island. I was a young girl, about 9 years old, and have just watched the movie “Jaws” about a giant man-eating great white shark. Naturally, I was influenced by the movie and developed a fear in going into the sea.

“Ayah, I don’t want to snorkel, there will be sharks out there!”  I said in a panicked tone.

“There are no sharks around here. Only beautiful fish and corals,” my father assured me.

But my fear of the imaginary shark was greater than the assurance given by my father. So in the end, I did not snorkel during the family holiday, and my father was a little upset with me.

In 2010, I surprised my father when I got my Open Water Scuba license, and immediately proceeded to get Advanced Open Water license. My irrational fear of the man-eating great white shark is long gone. It’s a wonderful feeling to be underwater, being in the world of fish and corals, macro – Jean Jacques Cousteau once said “ The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever”– and that is exactly what I feel. When I scuba dive, I am in awe, even at the most simplest creature or the sea’s topography, and when I am not scuba diving, I long to come back to the sea.

I love scuba diving so much that I continued my diving education because I have an ambition to share and spread to others about scuba diving. I do know many people hesitate to start scuba diving, citing the fear of deep water. But once I am able to convince them that I will be there through out your training, my clients will usually have that wide grin and said to me “ this experience is like no other!”.Through scuba diving education, individuals will experience the wonders and magnificence of the underwater realm.

I am now a certified PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor. Notably, my first group of students was a group of eight Etiqa Takaful agents. Subsequently, I teach scuba diving to Heriott-Watt University students as well as individual clients.
